In order to secure their backup quarterback position, the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the contract extension of Antonio Pipkin on Thursday.

Pipkin was part of an in-season trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats back in August. He finished the season completing just one pass for 57 yards. His specialty was short-yard situations as he ran 25 times for 49 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games played.

The Roughriders are the fifth team Pipkin has played on in his six seasons in the CFL. He has spent most of his career as a backup throwing for 1,903 yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He’s added 635 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns as well.

In addition to the Ti-Cats, Pipkin has also played for the Montreal Alouettes, Toronto Argonauts and BC Lions. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals are not being selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Saskatchewan currently has five quarterbacks on the roster, with Trevor Harris being the main starter. Harris’ tibia injury prevented him from playing the last 13 games of the season seeing Jake Dolegala take over.

Pipkin could be battling for the second- or third-string quarterback job for the Roughriders come the 2024 season.

Saskatchewan went 6-12 this past season, finishing with a seven-game losing streak.
