CFL fans have already seen the importance of keeping reliable kickers and punters on your roster.

So far, three kickers or punters have re-signed with their original teams on contract extensions. The Ottawa Redblacks brought back punter Richie Leone and kicker Michael Domagala on new deals.

Of the remaining pending free agents, six more kickers and punters are still on their way to free agency starting in February. Here is the list of the top six pending free agent kickers and punters in the CFL.

Top Six CFL Free Agent Kickers, Punters

Breaking down best available kickers and punters (Previous Team)

6. Kaare Vedvik, Punter (Hamilton Tiger-Cats)

After two seasons of handling punting duties for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Kaare Vedvik came over to Hamilton in a trade involving quarterback Antonio Pipkin. Vedvik played in 10 games during the 2023 season, averaging 44.2 yards per punt with a long of 62 yards. Prior to the CFL, Vedvik was apart of eight different NFL teams from 2018-21.

5. Brett Lauther, Kicker (Saskatchewan Roughriders)

Saskatchewan has leaned on the leg of Brett Lauther for the past five seasons as its kicker. This past season, he made 36-of-44 field goals for an 81.8% conversion rate with a long of 54 yards. Lauther has seen a regression in his numbers dropping from 85.1% in 2021. His numbers will need to pick up as it was a question of whether the Roughriders bring him back or he goes somewhere else to compete for the starting kicker job.

4. Stefan Flintoft, Punter (BC Lions)

The best punter available is the big-legged Stefan Flintoft, who completed his third season with the BC Lions team. Flintoft averaged 46.7 yards per punt with a long of 80. His career with BC has been consistent, averaging 47 yards per punt in three seasons, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Lions re-sign the 28-year-old specialist.

3. Marc Liegghio, Kicker (Hamilton Tiger-Cats)

After an up-and-down first two seasons in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Marc Liegghio found his footing with the Tiger-Cats in 2023. Liegghio had a career best 41 field goals made and converted 87.2 percent of his kicks. He seems to be improving each year as a kicker as accuracy is a focal point for him.

2. Boris Bede, Kicker (Toronto Argonauts)

While Boris Bede didn’t get as many opportunities with field goals with Toronto’s explosive offense, when he was called upon, he was near automatic. Bede only missed two of his 39 field goals, leading the CFL with a 94.9% conversion rate. His previous career-high in field goal percentage was 88.6%. The 34-year-old veteran kicker will have no problems finding a place to kick in 2024 if it isn’t with the Argos.

1. Sergio Castillo, Kicker (Winnipeg Blue Bombers)

At age 33, Sergio Castillo has been among one of the best kickers in the CFL. Castillo has been on and off in the league since 2015, as he has also kicked in the NFL, AAF and XFL. He finished third in the league in field goal percentage, making 90.2% of his kicks converting 46-of-51. Winnipeg got to experience the second best CFL season of his career and with how hard the team has worked to bring players back, Castillo should be no exception.
