Toronto Argonauts Add All-American Offensive Lineman

Very quietly, the Toronto Argonauts have fortified their offensive line depth with talented American imports this offseason. The latest is UC Davis standout Nick Amoah.

Today, the Toronto Argonauts announced they have signed Associated Press All-American offensive lineman Nick Amoah. The UC Davis alum was the Big Sky's lineman of the year in 2022, becoming the first player in the school's story to accomplish those honors.

Amoah was a three-year starter at left tackle for Cal-Davis, playing in 45 games overall for the Aggies. Despite his accolades, the undersized 6-foot-2, 285-pound blindside protector went undrafted in 2022. He signed with the Chicago Bears, spending some time with them last spring, before the Vegas Vipers of the XFL selected Amoah in the league's rookie draft last June. The Vegas squad was ultimately not a part of the USFL-XFL merger

The Argos have recently succeeded in signing offensive linemen who don't check off the traditional NFL size requirements, most notably, 6-foot-2 offensive tackle Dejon Allen. The former team MVP at Hawaii was named the CFL's top offensive lineman in 2023.

With one yard of separation at the line of scrimmage in the CFL, the height and length requirements perceived as musts for offensive tackles in the United States do not apply in Canada.

As a result, Amoah will have a better chance of sticking in the CFL in Toronto than he did in the NFL. He joins an Argonauts offensive line that returns all five starters from a year ago — a unit that allowed the fewest sacks in the entire league, giving up just 19 in 18 games.
