USFL Teams Set in XFL-USFL Merger, Remaining Talent Available To Join CFL
New details have emerged in the new XFL-USFL merger with implications for the future of the new league and the CFL.
Pro Football Talk reported Tuesday that the new merged league has informed the USFL Players Association that the four USFL teams that will survive are the Michigan Panthers, Houston Gamblers, Memphis Showboats and Birmingham Stallions. The association has also informed its members of the news.
The USFL teams not moving forward for the 2024 combined season include the Pittsburgh Maulers, New Jersey Generals, New Orleans Breakers and Philadelphia Stars.
The XFL and USFL announced in September they had intentions of merging into one league. It was reported in November that the two leagues would officially merge with a kickoff date of March 30, 2024.
There is no word yet on which teams on the XFL side will be coming over to the merged league, but there is an expectation that four teams from the XFL will join.
This is important news for the CFL as it is a first glimpse into who will be available to be signed by the league. X account XFL Analyst created a list of players who are up for grabs in free agency.
There are over 200 players already on the list who will be available for CFL teams to sign, and an additional 200-plus players will soon be available from the XFL side. With less competition in the States, there are more opportunities for the CFL to grab talent.
The Montreal Alouettes signed linebacker Darnell Sankey this year after his stint in the XFL with the Arlington Renegades. Expect to see more players from the XFL and USFL seek opportunities to play in the CFL.
