Exploiting a huge advantage in size and depth in the frontcourt, Brian Zoubek (13 rebounds) and the Blue Devils opened a double-digit lead in the first half and Cal never seriously threatened to get back into the game.

Jordan Crawford (with ball) scored 27 points, including a breakaway dunk with just over 2 minutes remaining, as Xavier advanced to the Sweet 16. The Musketeers joined Michigan State as only schools to reach the round of 16 the last three years.
