FAQ: Sun Bowl
The 2011 Sun Bowl is just a day away. We're sure you have so many questions. We're here to help. (For an Xs and Os breakdown, check out Cory McCartney's game preview.)
• What's all this, then? It ain't the Grandaddy, but the Sun Bowl is something of a maiden aunt: This will be the 77th contest with this name held in El Paso.
• Where will this game be played? El Paso's Sun Bowl Stadium, home field for UTEP and host of this game for almost 50 years.
• Why do I remember this game with a vague sense of creeping dread? You're thinking of the 2008 3-0 Oregon State-Pitt game, widely acknowledged as the very worst modern postseason college football contest.
• That sounds pretty gloomy. How ironic, for a Sun Bowl! Haha! Not as ironic as last year, when it snowed on the stadium, less than a mile from the Mexican border, but definitely the nadir of the December bowl experience in the BCS era.
• When is it on television? Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, December 31. The game will be televised on CBS.
• Whom does it feature? Current conference tie-ins bind the Pac-12 and ACC to El Paso.
• What about this year? This year 8-4 Georgia Tech and 7-5 Utah will travel south for New Year's Eve.
• Who will call the game? The CBS varsity booth squad takes a 2011 curtain call, with Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and Tracy Wolfson at the helm.
• Who sponsors the game? Hyundai, currently, but don't get too comfortable with that; this game has had a tendency since the mid-'90s to swap out title sponsors on the regular.
• Enough about the football. What about the loot? Oh, participating Sun Bowl players, you are truly blessed, to receive the traditional Sun Bowl Helen of Troy hairdryer. I have one of these at home, and often feel that I didn't have proper reverence for its place in game history when it came into my possession. Read on and educate yourselves.
