Southern California has hired Florida Gulf Coast's Andy Enfield to be its new head basketball coach, as SI.com originally reported Monday night.

"My family and I are thrilled to join the Trojan Family and be part of the unparalleled athletic tradition at USC," Enfield said in a statement released by USC. "I am looking forward to bringing an exciting, up-tempo style of play to USC and building the men's basketball brand into one that the fans and basketball community will enjoy and respect."

Enfield led FGCU to the Round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament last week, a charmed run of fearless play that captured the nation for a week. Enfield became the biggest story in college basketball, as everything in his back story from his super model wife to his niche as a shooting specialist captivated America.

The tournament appearance was the first ever for FGCU, who only began competing in Division I athletics in 2011. Enfield amassed a 41-28 record at FGCU, including one Atlantic Sun Tournament championship in 2013.

Enfield came to FGCU from Florida State, where he served as an assistant to Leonard Hamilton, and also has significant experience as an NBA assistant coach.

He will replace Kevin O'Neill, who was fired after beginning the season 7-10. Long-time USC assistant Bob Cantu replaced O'Neill as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
