Johnny Manziel's historic Heisman Trophy-winning season almost never happened, according to a report from MySanAntonio.com. Sources within Texas A&M confirmed that the school briefly suspended Manziel for the entire 2012 season following his arrest last summer stemming from a fight outside a bar.

Manziel was arrested in College Station last June for fighting, failing to identify himself and possessing two fake IDs. As a result, the school placed him on suspension for the full 2012 season before the punishment was overturned on appeal during fall camp. Manziel reportedly sought a transfer to a junior college before his suspension was removed, allowing him to become the starting quarterback for the Aggies as a redshirt freshman. Manziel won the starting job over Jameill Showers, who has since transferred to UTEP.

Sources in Texas A&M's athletic department said the university's dean of student life overturned the suspension last year, according to the report. A “status of compliance” hearing regarding Manziel's arrest is set for July 15.

Manziel made headlines this week after sending a out tweet stating “(expletive) like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave college station … whenever it may be." According to MySanAntonio.com, that tweet was in reference to a parking ticket Manziel received over the weekend.
