Virginia Tech sophomore running back Michael Holmes has been dismissed from the university, as first reported by the Daily Press in Hampton Roads, Va.
Athletic director Jim Weaver said Holmes has been “permanently separated from the university” by a student judicial board. Holmes was charged with felony malicious wounding stemming from his connection with an April fight in Blacksburg. He was convicted of misdemeanor assault last month.
Because Holmes was not convicted of the felony, he was eligible for reinstatement into the football program, per Virginia Tech policy. But the student judicial board opted to dismiss Holmes from the university instead. Weaver said the reasons behind the decision were not clear:
“I don’t know exactly what the situation is,” Weaver said. “This is a difficult one to communicate. … I can only tell you what has occurred.”
