Wyoming's Dave Christensen officially out as Cowboys coach

After starting the season 4-2 with an almost-upset of Nebraska in there, Wyoming's football season collapsed. The team lost five of its last six games, and the lone win came in overtime over 1-11 Hawaii. Even with talented quarterback Brett Smith and injuries ravaging other Mountain West foes, there would be no bowl game. Now a day after the regular season ended for the Cowboys, it seems as though Dave Christensen's run at Wyoming is also over.

Football Scoop originally reported that Christensen was meeting with athletic director Tom Burman on Sunday, and that meeting allegedly won't bring good news, with Football Scoop and later USA Today's Dan Wolken reporting Christensen was stepping down. In five years with Wyoming, Christensen went 27-35 and led the Cowboys to multiple bowl games.

Wyoming made it official just after 5 p.m. ET.

In an attempt to fix the situation down the stretch, the Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Chris Tormey after a two-game stretch in which Wyoming lost to Colorado State and San Jose State by a combined score of 103-66. The team allowed an average of 46.75 points in the games post-Tormey's firing. SB Nation's Steven Godfrey visited Laramie in November and wrote about the state of Wyoming athletics. Notable was the review of both the basketball and football programs ordered by new president Bob Sternberg.

Per Godfrey: 

"There were a lot of heads in the sand. People thought certain things were acceptable, and they were wrong," Sternberg tells me Sunday afternoon. "You can talk about the altitude and the cold and the distance from a particular airport, but the reality is that we're not where we want to be. It's not like this is the first year football hasn't been where we want it to be. It's a trend."
