Alabama quarterback Luke Del Rio announces he's transferring on Twitter

Alabama's quarterback situation in the post-AJ McCarron era has cleared up just a bit. Walk-on redshirt freshman Luke Del Rio took to Twitter to let everyone know he is leaving the Crimson Tide, and it isn't immediately known where his next destination will be.

Junior Blake Sims is expected to take over for McCarron. In limited action this year, Sims was 18-of-29 for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

Del Rio, who finished his high school ball in Colorado after playing in Jacksonville, was a Rivals three-star recruit with scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Colorado State. He chose to play for Alabama as a walk-on. Earlier this season, McCarron told AL.com he thought the son of Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was "going to be a heck of a player in the future."

The Crimson Tide still have plenty of other options aside from Sims. Four-star QB recruit Cooper Bateman, from Salt Lake City, and Parker McLeod, a three-star recruit from Marietta, Ga., are in tow from the 2013 class, as is 2012 recruit Alec Morris, from Allen, Texas. And even more reinforcements are on the way in the form of four-star prospect David Cornwell, the fifth-best quarterback in the class of 2014. If Del Rio believed he wasn't going to make an impact at Alabama, or that he wouldn't mesh well with new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, it makes sense for him to look for a situation that offers more playing time.
