'Jameis Winston Day' to take place on July 5 in Florida State QB's hometown

What does a national title and a Heisman Trophy get you? Well, if you’re Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, a day named in your honor in your hometown. That’s right: Hueytown, Ala., and neighboring Bessemer, Ala., have dubbed July 5 “Jameis Winston Day,” sure to bring joy to the masses and anger to SEC fans across the state.

“Council member Fran Zinnerman said the City of Hueytown will present Winston with a key to the city,” says Jeff Sentell of AL.com. “The city also plans to affix two permanent signs in the community to honor Winston. Zinnerman said those steel signs will not likely be finished by the celebration. The signs will be placed at Hueytown High and on Allison-Bonnett Drive.”

There’s also a celebration scheduled at Gilmore-Vines Stadium, and Hueytown High will retire Winston's jersey at some point. This says a lot about the redshirt sophomore, who has played just one full collegiate season. Winston, a former Parade All-America, won the Heisman after leading the undefeated Seminoles past Auburn in the final BCS championship game. He racked up 4,057 total yards with 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during the 2013 campaign.

Winston’s father, Antonor, recently said he expects Jameis to play two more seasons in Tallahassee, although the lure of a potential top-five pick in the NFL draft would be hard to turn down. There are still questions about Winston’s maturity level, but his talent is undeniable.

I’m sure appropriate jokes will be made by the appropriate parties and everyone will be responsible and adult-like. Still, I think we can all agree it might be a good time for Alabama grocery store Jack’s Foodland to actually start selling Winston king crab legs. At the very least, maybe Hueytown can lead everyone in a celebratory walk through some motion doors, you know, for kids.
