University of Texas at Austin president Bill Powers has been asked to resign, according to a report from The Texas Tribune.

Chancellor Francis Cigarroa said Powers would be fired if he does not resign before a Board of Regents meeting on July 10. Sources who spoke to the Tribune said Powers has indicated that he will not resign but is willing to discuss when he will step down.

Though Powers is backed by faculty and alumni, according to the report, tensions have arisen between him and Cigarroa. Powers' removal is imminent less than a month after reports that the University of Texas System is set to launch an investigation into UT Austin's admissions practices.

Powers oversaw the hiring last year of former Louisville coach Charlie Strong to replace Mack Brown. Powers was also heavily involved in tabbing athletic director Steve Patterson to succeed DeLoss Dodds.
