Miami assistant Micheal Barrow taking sabbatical from coaching

Miami assistant coach Micheal Barrow is stepping down to take care of a family matter. Barrow, who played linebacker at Miami from 1989 to 1992 and won two national championships with the Hurricanes, joined the team's staff in 2007.

Miami assistant coach Micheal Barrow is taking a sabbatical from coaching to deal with a family matter, the program announced Friday. According to FoxSports.com's Bruce Feldman, Barrow is leaving to help take care of his ailing mother.

It's unclear how long Barrow will be out of coaching.

Barrow, who played linebacker at Miami from 1989 to 1992 and won two national championships with the Hurricanes, joined the team's staff in 2007 as linebackers and special teams coach under head coach Randy Shannon. He was retained when Al Golden took over as coach in 2010.

The 44-year-old Barrow also played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Houston Oilers, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.

Running backs coach Hurlie Brown will assume Barrow's linebackers coach role, while assistant director of football operations Tim "Ice" Harris will coach running backs. Current high school coach Kevin Beard, a former player for Miami, is taking Harris's job.

Miami went 9-4 last season and finished tied for second in the ACC Coastal division.
