The College of Charleston has fired men's basketball coach Doug Wojcik, school president Glenn McConnell announced Tuesday.

In a statement, McConnell said athletic director Joe Hull is now responsible for the program.

The school had been investigating Wojcik after he was alleged to have physically and verbally abused players.

McConnell ordered a second investigation of Wojcik after new allegations of physical abuse surfaced. This followed a 50-page report detailing alleged verbal abuses that was completed in June.

After allegations of physical abuse were brought by former player Trevonte Dixon, Wojcik's lawyer, Scott Thompsett, released video of the incidents in question and released a statement arguing that the video supported Wojcik's claims that he did not physically abuse his players and the incidents were part of regular coaching.

The Cougars went 38-29 in two seasons under Wojcik.

Here is part of the statement released Tuesday by McConnell, the school's president:

You may have read media accounts or seen or heard information from other sources about the allegations regarding Mr. Wojcik.  I want you to know, however, that the College of Charleston does not publicly discuss or comment on the specifics of personnel matters, unless there is a significantly compelling or legally mandated reason to do so.

As president, my highest priorities include the safeguarding of our College community, the preservation and enhancement of the College’s excellent reputation, and the creation of a campus environment in which all students, faculty, staff, volunteers, friends and guests feel welcome, safe and respected.
