Boston College Eagles facts

Boston College returns 10 starters in 2014 — five players on each side of the ball.

This will be the 25th meeting between Boston College and UMass. The Eagles currently hold a 19-5 lead in the series.

The Eagles will start Florida transfer Tyler Murphy at quarterback this season. Last year, Murphy completed 60.5 percent of his passes, threw for six touchdowns and ran for three more.

Steve Addazio, who has a 20-17 head coaching record, will be entering his second season leading the Eagles.

Boston College will be looking to win its season opener in back-to-back years for the first time since the 2009-10 seasons.

Massachusetts Minutemen facts:

UMass is returning 12 starters in 2014 — seven on offense and five on defense.

Mark Whipple returns as UMass coach this season for his second stint with the university. Whipple held a 49-26 record in his first run with the team, which included three postseason appearances and a Division I-AA national championship.

The Minutemen will split their home games between two stadiums in 2014. Three games will be played at Gillette Stadium, home of the NFL's New England Patriots, and three will be played at Warren McGuirk Memorial Stadium, which is re-opening after renovations.

UMass has not beat Boston College since 1978, when it secured a 27-0 victory in Amherst.

The Minutemen have lost back-to-back home openers.
