Western Illinois Leathernecks vs. Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin opened the 2014 season with a 28-24 defeat at the hands of LSU in Houston. The Badgers will face Western Illinois in their home opener on Saturday. The Leathernecks, who play in the Missouri Valley Conference of the FCS, won their opening game 45-7 over Valparaiso. 

Wisconsin is the first of two Big Ten teams Western Illinois will play this season. They will also face Northwestern on Sept. 20.

The Badgers are ranked No. 14 in the coaches poll following their season-opening loss.

Running back Melvin Gordon was limited by injury in the opener but rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

Freshman tight end T.J. Watt will also be out for an extended period of time due to a knee injury. Watt is the younger brother of J.J. Watt, who formerly played for Wisconsin and now stars in the NFL. 

First-year starting QB Tanner McEvoy completed only eight of 24 passes in his debut. He also rushed for 40 yards on six carries.

Wisconsin rushed for 268 yards on 39 carries against LSU.

Wide receiver Reggie Love scored a 45-yard rushing touchdown in the opener. It was the first carry of his Wisconsin career.

Wisconsin last lost a home opener in 1995. 

The Badgers won three straight Big Ten titles from 2010 to 2012. 

Wisconsin has lost four straight bowl games, last winning a postseason contest in 2009.
