UMass extends coach Derek Kellogg's contract through 2018-19 season

The University of Massachusetts has extended basketball coach Derek Kellogg's contract through the 2018-19 season, with the potential to extend him up to the 2020-21 season, the school announced on its website.

The University of Massachusetts has extended basketball coach Derek Kellogg's contract through the 2018-19 season, with the potential to extend him up to the 2020-21 season, the school announced on its website.

Kellogg led UMass to the NCAA tournament last spring for the first time since 1998. UMass lost to Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

In six seasons at UMass, Kellogg is 109-86 and has won at least 20 games in each of the last three seasons. The Minutemen were an NIT team in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. UMass reached the 2012 NIT semifinals before losing to eventual champion Stanford.

“We are extremely pleased with the job Derek has done in his time here and feel the program is in a good place,” athletic director John McCutcheon said in the school's release. 

"He has built a solid foundation for the future. We felt it was appropriate to put something together that the University and he are both comfortable with in terms of the extension to keep him here for a long time."

Kellogg is a former UMass basketball player himself, and was coached by John Calipari from 1991-95. He has the third-most wins of any coach in UMass history behind Calipari and Jack Leaman.

The Minutemen were 24-9 last season and were ranked as high as No. 13 in the Associated Press poll.
