Notre Dame grad assistant Kyle McCarthy says he's cancer free
Notre Dame grad assistant and safeties coach Kyle McCarthy announced Tuesday on Twitter that he is cancer free.
McCarthy, 28, took a leave of absence from the team in August after being diagnosed with Stage 3 testicular cancer in July.
"I appreciate each and every one of your thoughts and prayers," McCarthy wrote in a statement. "This has truly been a humbling and eye-opening experience as I've undergone chemotherapy treatments and surgeries to fight this terrible disease. Fortunately this type of cancer was treatable, and with the help of amazing doctors and nurses, and incredible support from family and friends, I was given a clean bill of health. I am officially cancer free. I'm excited to put this behind me and turn the page on this chapter of my life. Thank you all for the support! It helped more than you can know."
A former safety at Notre Dame, McCarthy was a member of the Irish for five seasons and served as a team captain in 2009. His 240 career tackles rank second in school history amongst defensive backs.
He then spent time with the Broncos, Chiefs and Raiders before a series of knee injuries ended his NFL career.
