The voting was conducted by 55 conference media members. With 16 votes, Conner finished three votes ahead of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

Over 12 games this season, Conner recorded 1,675 yards and 24 touchdowns.The 6-foot-2, 250-pound sophomore recorded consecutive 200-yard rushing games against Georgia Tech and Duke and scored two touchdowns in last Saturday's win over Miami that made the Panthers bowl eligible.

Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley placed third with eight votes, while Louisville safety Gerod Holliman finished fourth with six.​

“We are tremendously proud of James and all that he achieved this season,” Pitt coach Paul Chryst said. “In addition to his production on the field, James has been an excellent teammate and leader. I know our entire program takes pride in James receiving this prestigious honor.”​

Winston, who was named the conference's preseason player of the year, passed for 3,250 yards with 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in helping the Seminoles post a 12-0 record heading into Saturday's conference championship matchup with Georgia Tech. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner tossed a career-high four interceptions in Saturday's win over Florida.

Beasley, a redshirt senior, was named the conference's defensive player of the year. Conner (23) received seven more votes than Winston for the conference's offensive player of the year.
