Report: Gene Chizik named defensive coordinator at North Carolina

Former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has reportedly accepted the defensive coordinator position at North Carolina, according to Brandon Zimmerman of ESPN's SEC Network.

Former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has reportedly accepted the defensive coordinator position at North Carolina, according to Brandon Zimmerman of the SEC Network.

Chizik coached Auburn for four years, leading the Tigers to the BCS National Championship after an undefeated season in 2010. He was fired after the 2012 season, which the team finished with a 3-9 record.

He left Auburn with a 33-19 record, and the team's national title was bracketed by wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl and the 2011 Chick-fil-a Bowl.

Prior to coaching at Auburn, Chizik was head coach at Iowa State, and spent 10 seasons as a defensive coordinator at Auburn, Stephen F. Austin, UCF and Texas.

He has not coached since being fired in 2012, and this season he has been working as an analyst for the SEC Network.

North Carolina fired Vic Koenning, the previous defensive coordinator, after the team's defense struggled in the ACC this past season. The Tar Heels allowed 39 points per game, finishing the year 4-4 in the conference and 6-7 overall.
