Former Boston College, NC State coach Tom O'Brien retires

Former Boston College and NC State head coach Tom O'Brien has announced his retirement.

Former Boston College and North Carolina State head coach Tom O'Brien has announced his retirement, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

O'Brien was the head coach of the Eagles from 1997-2006 before taking over at NC State from 2007-2012. He spent the last two seasons as a tight end coach and associate head coach at Virginia. 

The 66-year-old started off his coaching career as an offensive line/tight ends coach for Navy, his alma mater. O'Brien then joined the Virginia staff from 1982-1996 as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Under O'Brien, Boston College won six straight bowl games, were 2004 co-champions of the Big East and finished the season ranked four times in 10 seasons. He compiled a 75-45 record with the Eagles before leaving to take the NC State job. 

The Wolfpack went 40-35 during O'Brien's tenure, their best season coming in 2009 when they went 9-4 and finished the season ranked No. 25. While at NC State, O'Brien coached future NFL quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Mike Glennon.

O'Brien had a career 115-80 coaching record, including going 8-2 in bowl games.
