Man sent to jail for not helping cops investigating LSU gear sold on eBay

A Baton Rogue, La. man went to jail rather than cooperate with cops investigating how some official game-worn LSU football gear ended up being sold on eBay.

A Baton Rogue, La., man went to jail rather than cooperate with cops investigating how some official game-worn LSU football gear ended up being sold on eBay, reportsThe Advocate.

According to the report, 25-year-old Fletcher Sanders, a shoe store worker, told police that he would rather be sent to jail than rat out a player who was allegedly part of the scheme.

A police report revealed that authorities made contact with Sanders after finding out he sold cleats and gloves that were advertised on eBay as having been worn during LSU’s 10-7 victory over Ole Miss on Oct. 25.

Sanders then told investigators that he sold the gear for a player on the LSU football team. When cops asked who that player was, Sanders refused to say.

When threatened with jail time because he wasn't cooperating, Sanders said, "Do what you have to do. I am not going to be responsible for ruining someone’s career," according to the police report.

The police promptly took Sanders into custody and charged him with principal to theft and possession of stolen things. He was released after posting $3,000 bail.

The police report revealed that the equipment sold did belong to the football team. NCAA rules prohibit current student-athletes from selling team gear for profit.

An LSU police spokesman said that the theft remains under investigation and that investigators believe the sale of the gear was isolated. They have yet to recover the shoes and gloves that were sold on eBay.
