Jim Harbaugh's son, Jay, joins Michigan staff as assistant

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has added his son to his coaching staff. Jay Harbaugh was named tight ends coach and assistant special teams coach, the school announced Tuesday. 

Jay Harbaugh, 25, spent the last three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens as an offensive quality control coach, working for his uncle, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

"Jay gathered a wealth of experience the last three seasons coaching in the NFL and I am excited to have him join our coaching staff," Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. "His passion for teaching the game is at the highest level and he will be an asset to our team. He did a phenomenal job in Baltimore and will do an excellent job mentoring our tight ends."

Jay is Harbaugh's son from his first marriage. Jim and his first wife have three children. He also has three children with his second wife. 

Jay started his coaching career right out of high school, working as a student assistant at Oregon State under coach Mike Riley, who coached his father with the San Diego Chargers. After four years in Corvallis, Jay joined the Ravens staff in 2012.

Jay Harbaugh actually has something his father doesn’t—a Super Bowl ring. Jay was on the Ravens’ staff the year they beat his father’s San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII.

"It is an amazing opportunity and privilege to coach football at one of the premier universities in the world," Jay Harbaugh said in a statement. "I’m ecstatic about being in Ann Arbor and to be part of building something special with the great people in our program."
