Oklahoma quarterback Cody Thomas quit the baseball team so he can turn his attention to competing for the starting quarterback job this spring.

Oklahoma quarterback Cody Thomas quit the baseball team so he can turn his attention to competing for the starting quarterback job this spring, the school announced.

Thomas was an outfielder for the Sooners baseball team and appeared in 14 games last season.

Thomas, who will be a redshirt sophomore this season, filled in for the Sooners after starter Trevor Knight injured his neck during a 48-14 loss to Baylor on Nov. 8.

Thomas started the next three games for Oklahoma, completing 46 percent of his passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Knight came back for the Russell Athletic Bowl against Clemson and was picked off three times during the 40-6 loss. Oklahoma finished 8-5 (5-4 Big 12) and failed to win 10 games for the first time since 2009.

Thomas, Knight and Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job.
