Buffalo hires former Louisiana-Lafayette DL coach Tim Edwards

Former Louisiana-Lafayette defensive line coach Tim Edwards is joining Buffalo in the same role.

Former Louisiana-Lafayette defensive line coach Tim Edwards is joining Buffalo in the same role, according to sources.

Edwards, 46, had coached for the Ragin’ Cajuns the last four seasons until his dismissal last month. He replaces John Scott Jr., who left the Bulls earlier this month to become a defensive quality control coach for the NFL’s New York Jets.

Prior to his tenure with Louisiana-Lafayette, Edwards was co-defensive coordinator, defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida A&M for three seasons. He was an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Hampton from 2003-07, first as linebackers coach before moving to defensive line his last three years.

​​​Edwards coached defensive line at Pearl River Community College in 2002 and was defensive coordinator for the AF2’s Carolina Rhinos in the spring of 2002. He was an assistant at Kentucky State from 1998 through 2001, spending his first three seasons as defensive line coach before moving to linebackers his final year.

The Philadelphia, Miss. native got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Delta State, in 1996. A 12th-round pick of the New England Patriots in the 1991 NFL Draft, he was a defensive lineman for the team from 1991-93 and played in the CFL from 1995-97.

Edwards joins new Buffalo coach Lance Leipold, who was hired in December. Leipold won his sixth NCAA Division III national championship this past season at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

In Leipold’s eight seasons at the school, he had a record of 109-6. In October, he became the fastest coach in NCAA history to reach 100 wins.
