San Diego State's Dwayne Polee II has setback after return

San Diego State fifth-year senior Dwayne Polee II suffered a medical setback and did not suit up for Saturday's game against Boise State. Polee had played in the Aztecs' last game on Feb. 21, his first since collapsing during a Dec. 22 game against UC Riverside and subsequently being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.

An SDSU spokesman told the U-T San Diego that a cardiac monitor Polee had implanted returned "abnormal readings." Polee is having his medication "adjusted" and is out indefinitely, but the spokesman said the team is hopeful Polee could receive clearance to play again this season.

Without Polee, No. 24 San Diego State lost to Boise State 56-46 on Saturday. The loss snapped the Aztecs' 29-game home winning streak at Viejas Arena and also prevented them from clinching a share of the Mountain West Conference title. SDSU returned to the Associated Press Top 25 this week for the first time in two months.

Polee played 13 minutes in San Diego State's previous game, a 74-56 win over San Jose State. He scored three points and added one steal.

In addition to the irregular heartbeat that caused his collapse in December, SDSU head coach Steve Fisher said in December that Polee "had a similar issue occur" in December 2013. After Polee briefly stumbled to one knee during practice, Fisher said Polee was cleared to play and did not miss time.

San Diego State has two regular-season games remaining before the MWC tournament begins March 12. The NCAA tournament starts the following week.
