A Citadel football player was hospitalized and in critical condition on Wednesday after collapsing during practice the previous day, according to a report from The Post and Courier in Charlotte.

Fullback DaSean Daniels collapsed on the field after carrying the ball and getting into his stance for the next play, the report says. The team's medical staff took him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his skull, according to the report.

Daniels' father told the paper on Wednesday that Daniels' condition is improving.

“He is getting better,” David Daniels said, according to The Post and Courier. “The doctors and nurses are very optimistic and say he is progressing a lot faster than they expected. He’s very conscious and is responding to the things the doctors ask him to do, giving them the thumbs up.”

Daniels redshirted last season after playing football, baseball and track at Greater Atlanta Christian (Ga.) School. He switched positions, from linebacker to fullback, this spring.
