Daryl Gross resigns as Syracuse athletic director
Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross resigned from his position, but will remain at the university, the school announced Thursday.
Syracuse.com first reported the news. Peter Sala, the school's Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities, will be interim athletic director.
Gross became the school’s athletic director in 2005, replacing Jake Crouthamel, who was at the school for nearly three decades. Gross came to Syracuse from USC, where he was the school’s senior associate athletic director.
The school said Gross is being re-assigned to vice president, special assistant to the chancellor and adjunct professor of sports management at the Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics.
"He believes this transition will allow SU Athletics to move forward and position itself for continued future success" Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud said.
On Wednesday, head basketball coach Jim Boeheim announced that he would retire in three years.
In the decade that Gross has been at Syracuse, the school made the transition from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference, giving the athletic program more autonomy and a more lucrative cut of the league’s television and bowl money.
The move to the ACC helped increase the school’s revenue from sports by more than $10 million from 2013 to 2014.
Less than two weeks ago, the NCAA hammered the athletic department in a 94-page report detailing widespread academic fraud, which led to a reduction of scholarships and the vacating of 108 wins.
Boeheim was also suspended for nine conference games next season. The NCAA said that Boeheim “failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance."
