Auburn began its season with a 31-24 win over Louisville. The Tigers defense looked improved under new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, recording four sacks and allowing only 167 passing yards against the Cardinals. Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson struggled for much of the game. He completed 11 of 21 passes for 137 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions.
Jacksonville State also started its season with a win, defeating Tennessee-Chattanooga 23-20. The Gamecocks outgained the Mocs, racking up 411 yards compared to their opponent’s 196. The star of the game was Jacksonville State running back Troymaine Pope, who ran for 173 yards on 15 carries.
The Tigers will face the Gamecocks before dipping their toes into SEC play. After Auburn takes on Jacksonville State, LSU and Mississippi State loom on the schedule.
