Two teams expected to be near the top of Conference USA this season kick off conference play in primetime on Thursday night when Western Kentucky plays host to Louisiana Tech.

Louisiana Tech will be coming off a short week after beating Southern, 62-15, in its season opener. Because of the lopsided score, the Bulldogs were able to rest their starters. Coach Skip Holtz pulled starting quarterback Jeff Driskel after 33 snaps. Most of the first-team offense exited after around 25 snaps, and the first-team defense played a similar amount of time. Driskeltold reporters after the game that some of the players, including defensive tackle Vernon Butler, were angry about leaving the game, but the additional rest could help them this week.

Western Kentucky opened its season with a 14–12 victory over Vanderbilt last Thursday, ending a near comeback by the Commodores by stopping a two-point conversion in the game's final 33 seconds.

Louisiana Tech finished first in the C-USA West last year with a 9–5 overall record and a 7–1 record in conference. Western Kentucky was fourth in the C-USA East, going 8–5 overall and 4–4 in conference. Last season, Tech beat WKU 59–10
