SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale and his wife have donated $1 million to the University of Notre Dame to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students with demonstrated need.

Vitale said he and his wife, Lorraine, developed a love for the university where their daughters attended and played on the tennis team.

The university also announced that alumnus Robert Harris and his wife, Mary Ellen, have donated $5.5 million to underwrite the construction of a track and field stadium. Construction is expected to begin by year's end.

Harris earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Notre Dame and a doctorate in biochemistry from Rutgers University. He is president and CEO of Harris FRC Corp., a New Jersey-based firm that offers strategic expertise on development of drugs, biologics and medical devices.
