Texas mascot, Bevo XIV, died at the age of 13 on Friday morning, the school announced.

Bevo XIV, whose given name was Sunrise Studly, was retired as mascot on Tuesday after being diagnosed with Bovine Leukemia Virus. He passed away in his sleep on Friday morning.

The beloved steer became the Longhorns’ mascot in 2004 at the age of two, and was part of back-to-back Rose Bowl wins, including Texas’s 2005 BCS National Championship. At the start of his tenure, Texas won five-straight bowls and ultimately amassed 107 victories during his time with the university, including last week’s upset of then-No. 10 Oklahoma.

Texas, who has had a “Bevo” mascot since 1916, will soon name its Bevo XV.

The Longhorns have a bye this week and will next take the field against Kansas State on Oct. 24.
