The North Carolina Tar Heels have suspended cornerbacks Mike Hughes and M.J. Stewart indefinitely from football activities for violating team rules, the UNC Athletic Department said in a statement Thursday.

The suspension is related to an Oct. 4 incident that occurred in Chapel Hill.

“We have been aware of this situation since the night of the altercation and have been working closely with the University and Chapel Hill Police to gather relevant information,” said head coach Larry Fedora. “We hold our players to a high standard and M.J. and Mike will face the consequences for their involvement.”

Hughes, a freshman, and Stewart, a sophomore, will not play in the the team’s game against Wake Forest on Saturday.

Stewart has 20 tackles and three interceptions over five games this season and Hughes has recorded three tackles with the Tar Heels this season.
