Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has namedJ.T. Barrett the starting quarterback for the team's game against Rutgers on Saturday.

Barrett has served as Cardale Jones' back-up for the first seven weeks of the season.

In Saturday's 38–10 victory over Penn State, Barrett had 11 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns while also completing four passes for 30 yards and two touchdowns in the air. In the last two weeks, Jones has gone 30 for 43 with 375 yards and two touchdowns.

Last season, Barrett started the most of the regular season but missed the last three games due to an ankle injury. Jones assumed the starting quarterback duties to defeat Wisconsin in the Big 10 championship game and then Alabama and Oregon en route to hoisting the national championship trophy in the first College Football Playoff.

Barrett finished fifth in last year's Heisman Trophy voting after completing 64.7% of his passes for 2,834 yards, 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed 171 times for 938 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Buckeyes have been ranked No. 1 for the eighth consecutive week in the latest Associated Press poll.
