Former Tar Heels standout Sean May has joined UNC’s basketball staff, the university announced Monday.

May, who was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA tournament, will serve as the program’s assistant to the director of player development this season.

“Sean is one of the smartest players I have ever coached,” head coach Roy Williams said Monday in a statement. “He’s made the decision that his professional basketball playing career is over after 10 years, and he would like to see if coaching is the next step for him to pursue. The position he is in will allow him to help our staff and show him what our coaches do on a daily basis. We are pleased to have him back in Chapel Hill.”

May was a first-round selection in the 2005 draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. He went on to play five seasons in the NBA for the Bobcats and Sacramento Kings, before playing overseas for five years.

The former power forward led UNC to the 2005 national title. He averaged 22.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in the NCAA tournament.
