Notre Dame cornerback KeiVarae Russell has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a fractured tibia that he suffered during his team’s 19–16 win over Boston College on Saturday, reports Matt Fortuna of ESPN.

Russell was forced to wear a cast immediately after the game, and will have a rod surgically inserted into the leg Sunday night.

He has started all 10 games for the Fighting Irish this season, tallying 58 tackles and a sack. He also has two interceptions and a forced fumble.

The injury will likely mean that the senior’s season is over, however, he could return for postseason play in January if he has a quick recovery.

Russell missed the entire 2014 season and was not enrolled at Notre Dame after being suspended for academic fraud. He had never missed a game before the suspension.

No. 4 Notre Dame (9–1) will take on No. 13 Stanford (9–2) on the road Saturday.
