WACO, Texas (AP) Baylor left tackle Spencer Drango and some of his teammates were going to help quarterback Lynx Hawthorne get up along the Texas sideline when he made the tackle after throwing an interception.

Suddenly, there was a melee.

Hawthorne was coming up off his knees when he got shoved back to the ground by Longhorns safety P.J. Locke III.

While Drango and others were already on the field, most of the Bears came across the field from their bench. There were several scuffles even with referees and coaches between them trying to keep the teams separated. Bears receiver Corey Coleman gave Locke a two-handed shove.

''I've been in a bad one, that wasn't anything. That's in a mall. I've been in an alley in a game,'' Baylor coach Art Briles said.

''It escalated quickly, but I don't think anything happened out of it,'' Drango said. ''No one got hurt, no punches were thrown.''

The only penalty was unsportsmanlike conduct against Kevin Vaccaro, though it appeared the Texas safety tripped over Hawthorne after Locke's shove.

Texas coach Charlie Strong said the two teams were chirping back and forth before the game.

''You don't ever want anything to turn into a brawl.'' Strong said. ''Then they left their sideline and we were trying to get our guys back then you were just trying to separate everything. More than anything, just make sure no blows are thrown and nobody breaks a hand trying to hit somebody's helmet. Just be smart about it.''
