Miami tight ends coach and former interim head coach Larry Scott is Tennessee’s new tight ends coach, according to a source.

Scott led the Hurricanes to the Sun Bowl and had a 4–2 record this season after taking over for fired coach Al Golden, who was let go in late October amidst a lackluster 4–3 start. Scott interviewed for the Miami job on a full-time basis, but it ultimately went to former Georgia coach Mark Richt.

Richt offered an assistant job to Scott, but Scott had already received his job offer from Tennessee coach Butch Jones, according to the source.

The hiring of Scott is a significant addition for the Volunteers. Besides his coaching acumen, he is a respected recruiter in Florida.

This past season was Scott’s third with the Hurricanes. Prior to that, the 39-year-old spent eight seasons at his alma mater, South Florida. He was the Bulls’ running backs coach in 2012 after two years as tight ends coach. Scott was the program’s offensive line coach in ’09 following another two seasons as tight ends coach. He was a graduate assistant in ’06 and director of high school relations in ’05.

No big leap, but Tennessee ends year with clear growth in N'western rout

Scott was co-offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Sebring (Fla.) High, in 2004 and offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Freedom High in Tampa, Fla., from ’01–03. He was briefly run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Paul R. Wharton High in Tampa before the ’01 season.

Scott joins a rising Tennessee program that had a 9–4 record this past season under Jones, including a 45–6 rout of Northwestern in the Outback Bowl. The Volunteers figure to be in the hunt for the SEC title next season with a host of starters returning.

Jones has a 21–17 record in his three seasons with Tennessee.
