D-line coach Randy Hart retiring after 46 seasons

Stanford defensive line coach Randy Hart is retiring after a 46-year coaching career.

Stanford defensive line coach Randy Hart is retiring, he announced Tuesday.

Hart has spent 46 seasons as a college coach, including the last six with the Cardinal. During his impressive career, Hart helped coach teams to 28 bowl games, including 10 Rose Bowls.

“I am honored and blessed to have been at so many great places with so many fantastic coaches, student-athletes and fans,” Hart said in a statement. “And for that, I’m one of the luckiest coaches ever.”

The 67-year-old came to Stanford in 2010 after a season as Notre Dame’s defensive line coach. That followed 21 years at Washington, during which time he coached 14 first-team All-Pac-10 honorees and the Huskies made 12 bowl games and won the 1991 national championship. Hart joined the Huskies in ’88 as defensive line coach and became assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach from ’95–98. He stayed with Washington as defensive line coach from 1999–2008.

Prior to Washington, Hart coached the defensive line at his alma mater, Ohio State, from 1982–87. He served in the same capacity at Purdue from ’77–81 and at Iowa State from ’73–76.

The Cleveland native was offensive line coach at the University of Tampa in 1972 after getting his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Ohio State from ’70–71. He played for the Buckeyes and was a member of the ’69 national championship squad.
