Louisiana-Monroe defensive backs coach Chris Hampton is joining the staff of Tulane coach Willie Fritz, according to a source.

Hampton was hired at Louisiana-Monroe in December after spending the past four seasons as McNeese State’s defensive backs coach. He arrived with new Warhawks coach Matt Viator, who had previously been McNeese State’s coach the past decade.

A rising coach, Hampton tutored McNeese State safety Wallace Hall, who as a senior this past season. Hall was the Southland Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and made an FCS All-American team. At least one of Hampton’s defensive backs at McNeese State made the All-Southland first-team the past three years.

Before McNeese State, the 30-year-old was Central Arkansas’s safeties coach in 2011 after being a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech from 2009–10 and at Arkansas State in 2008. A Memphis, Tenn. product, he was a safety at South Carolina from 2004–07.

Tulane had a 3–9 record this past season under former coach Curtis Johnson, who was fired at its conclusion. The highly regarded Fritz was hired in December after posting a 17–7 record in his two seasons at Georgia Southern.

Fritz led the Eagles to the Sun Belt title in 2014 and was the league’s Coach of the Year. He has a 193-74-1 career record that also includes stints at Blinn College, Central Missouri and Sam Houston State.

He won two junior college national titles at Blinn and led Sam Houston State to the FCS title game in 2011 and 2012.
