USC has landed a commitment from Duke transfer guard Derryck Thornton, Scout.com reported Friday.

Thornton, a former five-star prospect in the 2015 class, averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 assists in 26 minutes per game as a freshman at Duke. He opted to transfer earlier this spring, likely a byproduct of Duke’s deep incoming recruiting class that includes point guard Frank Jackson, and the return of junior guard Grayson Allen to the team.

Thornton, a native of Las Vegas, was picking between USC, Kansas, Washington and Miami.

"He really got along with (associate head coach) Tony Bland, Enfield and the whole staff," Thornton’s father, Derryck Thornton, Sr. told Scout. "He liked all four staffs but it was really the trust level at USC with Bland and the staff and the comfort of being home."

Thornton will sit out the 2016-17 season and have three years of eligibility left.
