Texas head basketball coach Shaka Smart has received a one-year contract extension and pay raise, a deal that will keep him with the team through the 2022–23 season, reportsThe Austin-American Standard.

Smart will receive a $3 million base salary for the 2016–17 season, with another $100,000 raise each season.

“I’m very appreciative of the support from Chancellor Bill McRaven, President Greg Fenves and Men’s Athletics Director Mike Perrin,” Smart said in a statement. “I’m really happy at Texas and am excited about being here for a long time.”

The Longhorns finished 20–13 in Smart's first season in Austin, finishing fourth in the Big 12 and losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Northern Iowa on a buzzer-beating half-court shot.

Smart, 39, spent the previous six seasons with VCU, making the NCAA tournament his final five seasons with the school. He has a 183–69 record in seven seasons as a collegiate head coach.
