Watch: Central Michigan uses Hail Mary, lateral to beat Oklahoma State

Saturday’s Oklahoma State-Central Michigan game ended in unbelievable fashion.

Central Michigan pulled off a miracle to upset Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Saturday, but according to the game’s referee the play never should have happened. 

Cowboys quarterback Mason Rudolph was called for intentional grounding as time expired and the officials gave Central Michigan one untimed down. The game’s referee, MAC official Tim O’Dey, told The Oklahoman that the decision to award an untimed down was incorrect. 

On the untimed down, Chippewas quarterback Cooper Rush threw a Hail Mary to Jesse Kroll. Kroll was well short of the end zone, however, so he threw the ball back to Corey Willis, who ran into the end zone for a win.

The NCAA’s rule book states that an untimed down is not award if a penalty is committed by the offensive team that includes a loss of down. The game should have ended after the intentional grounding call, with Oklahoma State up 27–24. 

Both conferences confirmed that the game should not have been extended, but said the outcome won’t be changed. Oklahoma State athletic director called the mishap “incomprehensible” in a statement.

Rush finished with 361 yards passing and four touchdowns.
