Texas A&M Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin Fired

Sumlin was in his sixth year as the Aggies head coach.

Texas A&M fired its head football coach Kevin Sumlin, the school announced on Sunday.

The move came after the team's 45–21 loss to LSU on Saturday night. The school said that assistant Coach Jeff Banks will serve as interim head coach.

"Our expectations at A&M are very high. We believe that we should compete for SEC championships on an annual basis and, at times, national championships," athletic director Scott Woodward said. "I believe that we need a new coach to take us there. On behalf of Aggies everywhere, my thanks to Kevin and his family for his service to Texas A&M. I wish him the very best."

The Texas A&M staff first learned of the move Tuesday night as they the left practice field after the original report from The Houston Chronicle had been up for over an hour.

The Chronicle first reported Sumlin would be fired regardless of the outcome of the LSU game.

Sumlin was in his sixth year as the Aggies head coach. Texas A&M is 7–5 this season and have gone 8–5 each of the past three years.

Sumlin had two years remaining on his contract, and the Chronicle reported that the two sides will negotiate a $10 million buyout.

Texas A&M is reportedly looking at Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher.
