The No. 14 Hawkeyes are one of three teams in the West Division of the Big Ten at 4–0. They stepped out of conference for the final time last Saturday and pounded Middle Tennessee 48–3.

Nate Stanley and Brandon Smith hooked up on a pair of touchdown passes, while Toren Young had 131 yards on 11 carries to pace a Hawkeyes ground game that churned out 351 yards, while averaging 6.9 per carry. Stanley, who has had an impressive start with 965 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception, is trying to guide Iowa to its first 5–0 start since it ran the table in the regular season with 12 wins in 2015.

Iowa, which opened its conference slate by blanking Rutgers 30–0 on Sept. 7, has also shown a rock-solid defense thus far, conceding just 34 points through its first four games. The Hawkeyes rank third in the nation–and the Big Ten–in scoring defense at 8.5 points per game. They are also 10th nationally against the run (77.0 yards per game) and 19th vs. the pass (174.0).

No. 19 Michigan (3–1, 1–1 East) took out the frustrations of its embarrassing loss at Wisconsin on hapless Rutgers, administering a 52–0 pounding at home last Saturday that contributed to the firing of Scarlet Knights coach Chris Ash the following day.

Shea Patterson threw for 276 yards and a touchdown, while adding three short scoring runs for the Wolverines, who conceded just 152 total yards and 10 first downs after the Badgers tore through them for 377 rushing yards the week prior.

Michigan is 8–11 against AP Top 25 opponents since head coach Jim Harbaugh returned to his alma mater in 2015, including 5–8 against Big Ten foes. This is the first meeting between the teams since Iowa eked out a 14–13 home win over then-No. 3 Michigan in 2016 on Keith Duncan’s 33-yard field goal as time expired. It was the fifth win for the Hawkeyes in the last six games between the conference rivals, with their lone loss coming in their last visit to Michigan back in 2012.
