Bill Self ‘100% Positive’ He’ll Coach Kansas in 2023–24
In his first appearance in front of the media since being hospitalized on March 8, Kansas coach Bill Self announced he will return to the Jayhawks sideline next season.
“I am 100% positive I will be coaching at the University of Kansas this upcoming season and hopefully many more after that,” Self told reporters Wednesday.
Self was initially admitted to the hospital after “complaining of chest tightness and balance concerns.” He underwent a “standard heart catheterization and had two stents placed for the treatment of blocked arteries.” The school was clear that he’d make a full recovery, though Self would ultimately miss the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. Kansas fell to Arkansas in the second round.
The two-time NCAA champion left the health scare with a new perspective on his wellbeing and vows to take better better care of himself going forward.
“Can you imagine a doctor telling you you need to lose weight, eat right and exercise?” he said with a smile. “And I’ve been told that a long time but I’m taking that serious for the first time I probably have in my life.”
