Michigan State starting quarterback Payton Thorne is expected to enter the transfer portal, 247 Sports’s Chris Hummer reported on Sunday.

Thorne will be listed as a graduate transfer, meaning he is eligible to play immediately at his new school. Sunday is the last day for players to enter the transfer portal during this cycle.

The quarterback started for the Spartans each of the past two seasons, finishing his three total seasons at Michigan State with 6,494 passing yards, 49 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. The Spartans finished fifth in the Big Ten standings in 2022 with a 5–7 record.

He shined in his first season as a starter in 2021 when he totaled 3,233 passing yards and a school-record 27 touchdown passes with 10 interceptions in 13 games. Thorne also helped lead the team to a 2021 Peach Bowl win over Pittsburgh.

On top of Thorne entering the portal, Michigan State is also losing its top wide receiver, Keon Coleman, to the transfer portal, per The Athletic. He led the Spartans with 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns in 2022.
