Boise State Firing Coach Andy Avalos, per Source
Boise State is firing football coach Andy Avalos on Sunday after a 5–5 start to the season, a source confirmed to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Boise State hasn’t finished a season below .500 since 1997. The Broncos are coming off a 42–17 win over New Mexico State on Saturday to reach .500, but that wasn’t enough to save Avalos less than a day later.
Since being hired in January 2021, Boise State has a 22–14 record under the first-time coach. Before taking the job nearly three years ago, Avalos held several assistant coaching jobs with a myriad of college programs. He was last a defensive coordinator with Oregon.
It’s unclear who will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the season, though. Up next, Boise State will travel to face Utah State on Saturday.
