Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has a “long way to go” before making a decision on whether to return to the Longhorns in 2024 or enter the NFL draft, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Thamel’s report came on the heels of On3‘s Inside Texas and Rivals‘ Orangebloods.com furnishing stories suggesting that Ewers was leaning heavily towards a return to school next season.

Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods.com specifically referenced Ewers’s draft stock in his report on the quarterback’s potential return to school.

“From what I can gather, the fact that he’s not a lock to be among the top five or six quarterbacks in the 2024 draft if he were to declare has left him in a position where the smart play is to return for another year,” Ketchum wrote.

Ewers is in his second season under center for Texas. Despite battling injuries once again in 2023, Ewers has improved his passing numbers across the board compared to his redshirt-freshman season a year ago.

The redshirt-sophomore has completed 70.3% of his throws for 2,232 yards and 14 touchdowns to four interceptions, while averaging 9.1 yards per attempt. Ewers has already surpassed his passing yards total from 2022, despite playing in two fewer games. He is also on pace to shatter his passing touchdowns total set in his first year as a starter.

Texas is 9–1 on the season and 6–1 in Big 12 play, and at No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings, remains in the mix for the national title hunt.

The Longhorns travel to Iowa State on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. ET.
